Defense Position (Japanese: 守 ( しゅ ) 備 ( び ) 表 ( ひょう ) 示 ( じ ) Shubi Hyōji), also referred to as Defense Mode in the anime, is a battle position in which a Monster Card is in a horizontal position. In this position, the DEF value is used to represent this card in damage calculation, except where a card effect requires a specific examination of the ATK value.
Defense Position monsters can be either face-up or face-down. By default, Defense Position monsters cannot attack, and if they are attacked their controller does not take any battle damage.
Link Monsters and Maximum Monsters in Maximum Mode can never be in Defense Position, because they do not have DEF.
In the Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime, monsters can be Normal Summoned in face-up Defense Position under normal circumstances.
